PayPal’s stock surges on deal with OpenAI to become ChatGPT’s first payments wallet

PayPal launched an agentic commerce services solution on Tuesday and announced a partnership with OpenAI to become the first payments wallet on ChatGPT.

The agentic commerce services platform will include an agentic payment solution and a catalog and order management offering that allows merchants to connect their product data, their inventory and fulfillment to AI-driven discovery and checkout tools.

PayPal said that it is building its platform using an open approach which means that it supports multiple payments protocols and AI platforms, allowing merchants to link across multiple AI ecosystems through a single integration.

The company indicated that this will be the first of multiple AI commerce offerings that it plans to launch.

"AI is driving the next wave of innovation in how payments are made and managed," Michelle Gill, GM of Small Business and Financial Services at PayPal, said in a statement.

"Our agentic commerce services support leading payments protocols and AI platforms, directly connecting PayPal merchants to millions of consumers who are now using agent platforms for their day-to-day shopping needs."

PayPal will be launching an agentic payments solution called “agent ready” in 2026, which will allow merchants to accept payments on AI platforms. The agent ready tool will automatically enable fraud detection, buyer protection, and dispute resolution.

Product catalogs from merchants will be discoverable through strategic partnerships PayPal has with Wix, Shopware, Commerce and Cymbio. PayPal merchants will also gain discoverability on the AI answer engine Perplexity by the end of the year.

In order to expand its payments and commerce services to ChatGPT, PayPal will be adopting OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). Merchants utilizing OpenAI Instant checkout will receive payments processing support from PayPal, allowing ChatGPT users to check out instantly.

The company is also connecting its global merchant network to OpenAI, which it says will create a platform for both businesses and large brands to sell their products on ChatGPT.

"By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps for our joint customer bases."

OpenAI’s ACP will bring on the product catalogs of the merchants who use PayPal beginning next year.

Financial details of the partnership with OpenAI were not disclosed. PayPal’s stock rose nearly 4% on Tuesday.
