What is the Stock Market's Holiday Schedule?
Over the course of the year, the stock market closes for nine holidays. The New York Stock Exchange , has rules about how to observe holidays when they fall on weekends an other adjustments to this schedule. In most cases where a holiday falls on a weekend, the holiday will be observed on either Friday, if the holiday is on Saturday, or Monday, if the holiday is on Sunday. Stock Market Holidays New Years Day: The stock market closes on January 1 to celebrate New Years Day. In a rare exception to the rule above, New Years Day is not observed in years where it falls on a Saturday, which will happen in 2022. This is because moving the observance to Friday would result in New Years Day being observed twice in a single year. New Years Day is observed on Mondays in years where Jan. 1 falls on a Sunday. Because MLK Day always falls on a Monday, the stock market is always closed for the day. Washington’s Birthday: Stocks close every year on the Monday before February 22 for George Washington’s birthday, which is commonly known as President’s Day in celebration of both George Washington and President Abraham Lincoln. Good Friday: Markets are closed every year on the Friday before Easter in observation of Good Friday. Good Friday can vary on the calendar greatly because Easter Day is determined by the first full moon after the Spring Equinox and can vary by about a month from year-to-year. Memorial Day: The stock market closes on the last Monday of May every year to observe Memorial Day. Independence Day: Markets close every year for Independence Day on the closest day to July 4. This means markets will close on Friday when the fourth is on a Saturday, and on a Monday when it falls on Sunday. Labor Day: Labor Day is observed by the stock market on the first Monday of September to celebrate the social and economic achievements of the American workers. Thanksgiving Day: Markets are closed on the fourth Thursday of every November to celebrate Thanksgiving. Markets also close at 1:00 p.m. ET on the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is also known as Black Friday. Christmas Day: To observe Christmas Day, markets close on the closest market day to December 25, meaning Friday when Christmas is on Saturday and Monday when it falls on Sunday. Additionally, markets close at 1:00 p.m. ET on December 24 for Christmas Eve, but only if that day is a weekday
